Sir David at the unveiling of his portrait by artist Mandy Shepherd

We are very sad to announce the death of our former Trustee and Chairman Sir David William Hardy who died on Thursday 9th April 2020.

Sir David will be fondly remembered by all Trustees and staff, former and present, who had the privilege to work alongside him. He became a Trustee in 1992, and his ten-year period (1995-2005) as Chairman marked a significant time of modernisation at Greenwich.

The Millennium celebrations showcased the Royal Observatory, and at the National Maritime Museum the opening of Neptune Court was the first of many hugely successful capital redevelopment projects completed in the National Lottery era.

The Museum was very fortunate to be able to draw on Sir David's formidable experience of all things maritime and commercial during his tenure.

Our thoughts and warmest wishes are with his family and friends at this time.

If you would like to make a donation in memory of Sir David we would be very grateful. We will look to remember him in our memorial rose garden.
