We want to enrich people’s understanding of the sea, the exploration of space, and Britain’s role in world history and your donations ensure that we’re able to achieve this. In September 2018, thank to donations of over £12 million, we were able to open four new galleries in the National Maritime Museum. Not only did these galleries mean a permanent home for over 1,100 objects that had previously not been on display, but they tell significant and important stories about Britain’s maritime history that were not previously represented in the Museum.

We want to remember the stories of all Britons at sea not only at the Maritime Museum. The Cutty Sark was originally placed in Greenwich as a memorial to the Merchant Navy, particularly those who lost their lives in the two world wars. Through donations to help fund the extensive restoration work of the ship, including the Maurice Lambert’s memorial to the Merchant Navy displayed on board, we have managed to ensure that the Cutty Sark still stands in pride of place in Greenwich.

Alongside ensuring stories are remembered, your donations have also ensured the future of our grade I listed buildings, including the Queen’s House, the first fully Classical building in England. The recent restoration of the house, including work on the Tulip Stairs, the first geometric self-supporting spiral stair in Britain, and the stunning Great Hall, helps us tell the story of the house as a royal residence, as well as making the perfect home for our world renowned art collection.
